The Black Box Band’s musical philosophy is to play energetic, mainly English dance music using piano as a percussion instrument. Pianist Alice Jones certainly drives the band rhythmically – furniture and various bits of equipment have been known to fall off the stage with the vibrations from her stomping right foot. The glittering testimonials on www.theblackboxband.co.uk confirm that punters at their gigs love to dance to them.

The energetic interpretations of familiar – and not so familiar – tunes come from Steve Harrison (melodeon, mouth organs) and Chris Partington (fiddle, viola), who put many hours of hard work into crafting the tune sets. This attention to detail ensures that the dancers will enjoy the perfect match of dance to tunes, played at the correct speed. At the 18 March dance, the caller is Pete Coe ("A One-Man Folk Industry!"), a more than able substitute for the band’s usual caller, Sue Coe, although Pete is perhaps not so glamorous.
