Redruth, Flatfoot Percussive Dance Workshop

Friday, 17 February 2017, 19:00 - 20:00
by Sibs Riesen

The Flatfoot workshop with Sibs Riesen will help you to get the basics of the infectious percussive flatfoot step dancing from Appalachia.   Flatfooting uses the 4 sound Tennessee Walking step to produce the percussive 'drum beats' to accompany old time or any other folk music.  Sibs will teach you how to produce the four sounds, and show you other steps to make up your 'vocabulary' of percussive dance steps 'flatfoot style'.

Sibs learned her craft from Ira Bernstein, who is well known amongst dancers in Cornwall for his visits here 25 or more years ago when he went on to inspire dancers UK-wide with his extraordinary dancing. Come along with your comfortable flat shoes, with a leather sole preferably, and get dancing!

The workshop precedes an American Square Dance with caller and musicians from the USA.  Workshop and dance cost details below:

A rare opportunity for an American Square Dance with Ellen and Pete Vigour from Virginia, USA.   With guest banjoist, Ray Banks, these three fine musicians and caller promise you a terrific evening of Appalachian tunes and squares to dance your socks off to.  Ellen's fun and skilfull calling will guide dancers through the moves, making sure that everyone gets involved whatever their experience.

Pete and Ellen are in Cornwall for a brief visit, as their band, Uncle Henry's Favorites, is booked at the Friends of American Old Time Festival in Gainsboro.... The Old Time Herald says of them: "they're a dyed-in-the-wool old-time band with an enviable repertoire, inspiring chops, a noteworthy fan base, super-big hearts, and commitment to passing the music along. They jump into a tune or song with such spirit and musicianship, it's as though they're channelling old masters - but in their own style....truly central Virginia's community string band."

Ellen, Pete and Ray's gig in Penzance 5 years ago sold out, so make sure you get your dancing shoes on for 17 Feb.
